The Effect of Self-Construal on Spatial Judgments

چکیده
Much prior literature has focused on the effect of self-construal on social judgment. We highlight the role of self-construal in spatial judgments. We show that individuals with independent (vs. interdependent) self-construals are more prone to spatial judgment biases in tasks in which the context needs to be included in processing; they are less prone to spatial judgment biases in tasks in which the context needs to be excluded in processing. We show such spatial judgment effects when selfconstrual is operationalized by different cultures (study 1) and as a construct that shifts with situational primes (studies 2 and 3).

Transcending the "here": the effect of spatial distance on social judgment.
Construal level theory proposes that increasing the reported spatial distance of events produces judgments that reflect abstract, schematic representations of the events. Across 4 experiments, the authors examined the impact of spatial distance on construal-dependent social judgments. Participants structured behavior into fewer, broader units (Study 1) and increasingly attributed behavior to en...
متن کاملOn reducing an empathy gap: the impact of self-construal and order of judgment.
Empathy gaps, in which individuals exaggerate self-other similarities or differences, generate errors in social judgments. We investigated whether changing individuals' self-construal may reduce one specific empathy gap: the illusion of courage. Participants primed with independent or interdependent self-construal made judgments about their own and other people's willingness to dance in public....
متن کاملHaving an Interdependent Self-Construal Leads to Greater Weighting of Data In Causal Judgment
People’s causal judgments show systematic biases, including over-weighting of confirming information, and favoring prior beliefs over data. We investigated the effects of self-construal on data-weighting in causal judgments. We primed participants with interdependent or independent self-construals (interdependent people define themselves through relationships; independent through individual tra...
متن کاملInterdependent self-construal and neural representations of self and mother.
Representations of self are thought to be dynamically influenced by one's surroundings, including the culture one lives in. However, neuroimaging studies of self-representations have either ignored cultural influences or operationalized culture as country of origin. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the neural correlates of individual differences in interde...
متن کاملConstrual Level Theory and Spatial Distance Implications for Mental Representation, Judgment, and Behavior
Growing evidence points to a bidirectional relationship between spatial distance and level of mental representation, whereby distant (vs. near) events are represented by a higher level of representation, and higher levels of representations increase perceptions of distance. In the current article, we review research that establishes this association and explores its implications. We begin by br...
